Call for Proposals for Unique Columbus Gifts Opens Today

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Columbus City Councilmember Eileen Y. Paley, the Greater Columbus Arts Council (Arts Council), and Experience Columbus are partnering to give local artists a chance to have their work displayed for sale in a prominent downtown location.

A limited number of pieces will be offered for sale at the Experience Columbus store in the Arena District. Councilmember Paley is asking Columbus artists to create keepsakes or gifts that highlight the uniqueness of our community and display the creativity and energy of our city and region.

“Columbus is home to many gifted artists, and I want to make sure that they have the opportunity to share their talents with the world,” said Councilmember Paley. “The artists who are selected to participate in this program will make it possible for visitors to take a piece of Columbus wherever they go.”

Artists of any discipline who work or live in Columbus can apply for the program. Arts Council staff will review proposals to ensure that they meet requirements and then a selection committee comprised of respected arts and community leaders will choose the pieces that will be displayed in the Experience Columbus store.

“The arts are an important part of our city’s cultural image, so we’re excited to offer local pieces for sale in our visitors center,” said Brian Ross, President and CEO of Experience Columbus. “This collaboration with GCAC gives us the opportunity to support local artists and show off the creative spirit of Columbus.”

“Creating opportunities for Columbus artists to showcase and sell their work is a focus of the work we do for the city,” said Tom Katzenmeyer, President of the Arts Council.  “Being able to partner with City Council and Experience Columbus is a great way to leverage resources for the benefit of artists.”

Artists are encouraged, but not required, to create pieces in the $5-$40 price range that can be easily transported by domestic or international travelers.

Examples could include:

  • Small photobooks
  • Postcard sets
  • Posters or large prints
  • Lapel pins
  • Key chains
  • Paperweights

Online registration is open now through 5 p.m. on December 5.  For submission guidelines and instructions, go to www.gcac.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/CallForArtists-CityofColumbus-Keepsake.pdf.

Questions about submissions should be directed to Ruby Harper, Grants & Services director at (614) 221-8406 orrharper@gcac.org.

The German Village Art League was formed in 2009 to develop an artist alliance, and to cultivate awareness, appreciation, and accessibility of contemporary art. The league offers exhibition opportunities and a dialogue among artists, and promotes the neighborhood as a creative, artistic community. Membership to GVAL is open to anyone - in Columbus, Ohio or around the world - who wants to share in the creative community of German Village.

Parking Info

You can probably find a parking spot along Summit St. somewhere near the Stone Village Gallery which is at Second and Summit. Summit is one way south towards downtown. Summit is also parallel to N. Fourth St which is one way north away from downtown.

Though Second & Summit is only 2 blocks or so from High St. it is located in an area known as Italian Village. Italian Village is right next to the Short North but it has one big advantage over the Short North when it comes to parking. You can park anywhere in Italian Village without a resident parking permit. This of course greatly increases your chances of finding a convenient spot to park near Stone Village Gallery.

There is a home football game scheduled to start at 8 p.m. matching the Illinois Fighting Illini (4-4) against the Ohio State Buckeyes (6-1).

Dear Artist,

I hope this email reaches you doing well and enjoying summer. Thank you for your past contributions to Fresh A.I.R. Gallery’s Art of Recovery. Your support has contributed to making this gallery and event possible and we are incredibly grateful for that.

The Art of Recovery benefits the Fresh A.I.R. Gallery (Artists in Recovery), a one-of-a-kind project that provides a venue for public display of work by artists who experience mental health and/or substance abuse issues.  Fresh A.I.R. Gallery is a non-profit art gallery and project of Southeast Healthcare. The exhibitions educate the community and work to break down the stigma of mental illness and substance abuse by bringing focus to the artistic vision. Since opening in 2004, the gallery has displayed the work of over 200 artists in 54 exhibitions and sold nearly 200 pieces for more than $50,000. Artists receive 100% of the sale of their work. The gallery does not charge any fees and helps artists by catering an opening reception, promoting exhibitions, artists talks, future opportunities, and more.

We invite you to pARTicipate! Your donation of an original work of art for the 2014 Art of Recovery is an essential component in helping Fresh A.I.R. Gallery sustain its programs and meet its mission. Please help support this important conduit for artists and cultural exchange.

Please reply to this email with your commitment now or click this link: http://www.southeastinc.com/participate.php and include your information. The pARTicipate form is attached and includes all the benefits you’ll receive for your donation. If you don’t know what piece you are donating yet, that’s okay; we simply need your commitment by July 18 to be included in the $500 Early Bird Raffle. If you commit by August 15 you will be included in the $250 raffle and be listed in the event invitation.

*Original art with completed pARTicipate form information is due no later than September 12 and must be delivered to Fresh A.I.R. Gallery 131 N. High St. Columbus, OH 43215 during business hours Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:30 pm.

This year’s Art of Recovery will be held once again at the Hilton Columbus Downtown on the evening of Friday, November 7, 2014. Last year’s event was attended by more than 700 guests, featured over 90 pieces of original artwork in our silent and live auction, great food and refreshments, live entertainment, live art demonstrations and the presentation of our annual Recovery Award.

Please contact Myken Pullins at 614.225.0985 ext. 1206 orpullinsm@southeastinc.com with any questions.

Upcoming Juried Art Show for the Carnegie Gallery in August.

"The Origins of Abstraction"

The basis of abstract is the elements of design; color, line, shape, texture, form, and space. But, how are those elements transformed into abstract? From life and from nature. From culture and situations. From your emotions, as a poetic visual expression. There is always a source and a meaning, even if it is to see how the paint hits the canvas, such as with formalism.

Abstract Art Artists who enter this show will enter abstract pieces that have a definitive source of abstraction. If work is chosen, the artist will be asked to submit a short statement about the work and what they abstracted it from.

Jurors: Elsie Sanchez and Barb Vogel.

Show Dates: August 7 - September 19, 2014

2014 GVAL PROGRAM and EVENT SCHEDULE

The GVAL Board is pleased to announce the 2014 schedule with some an array of events for our member artists.  FOUR EXHIBITIONS this year - one juried and three all member exhibitions.  The Board has been working to create new opportunities for member artists this year and help to promote their art and their art careers.  One of our goals is to help make German Village one of Columbus' artist communities.

We will attempt to secure a space during the "Art Crawl" event in German Village which a long standing art event in Columbus.  Our hope is to have a space where we can exhibit art by our members for sale and we encourage our members to secure additional space for just their own space.

We are pleased to host a new exhibition/fundraiser for GVAL.  "Mouth Watering Art" will be a month long exhibition at the German Village Meeting Haus with a fundraiser as one element of the exhibition.  We hope to have a ticketed event with food inspired by the art work selected by the jurors.  The Board thinks this event has the potential of being a premier art event in Columbus.  We are partnering with the German Village Society and Wexner Center for the Arts which will open two new audiences to the work of our member artists.

We will again have two "All Member Feedback" programs and two "Networking Socials."  We hope to host these programs and socials in the art studios of our members.  It will be fun and interesting to see where some of members work.

We wrap up the year with two exhibitions in both November and December for all our members.  Members will be able to hang in both locations by only entering once.

We are definitely stretching ourselves to grow as an organization through new and exciting events that will increase the audience for our member artists.  help us by renewing your membership at only $20 again this year.  The Board is offering more opportunities this year for our members at no additional cost.  We spend approximately 97% of all membership dues on promoting the art and careers of our members.  The 3% administration costs is one of the lowest in the city, so know that your membership dues are truly be used for our members' careers as artists.

So renew your membership today and volunteer for our events.

Thank you and we really look forward to our 2014 program,

GVAL Board of Directors
